December Spotlight on Mental Health and Depression
For many people, the holidays include heightened expectations, financial and social stress, and memories of lost loved ones, all of which can cause anxiety and sadness. While holiday blues tend to be temporary and mild, depression is more serious and can last a long time without help or treatment.
Clinical depression is one of the most common mental illnesses, affecting more than
19 million Americans each year. Depression causes people to lose pleasure from daily
life, can complicate other medical conditions, and can lead to
suicide. Other common mental illnesses include anxiety disorders, eating disorders,
autism and schizophrenia. An estimated 26.2 percent of Americans ages 18 and older
suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder in a given year1.
Quick Health Data Online offers a variety of data related to depression and mental health:
- Adults with depression or anxiety disorder diagnoses,
- Adult social suport and poor mental health,
- Suicide death rates and counts,
- Adolescent suicide behaviors.
The system can generate maps as well as charts and tables to present data such as the
percent of adults ever diagnosed with
a depressive or anxiety
disorder
.
Additional Chart features in the system can present data in horizontal or
vertical bar charts, showing trend lines, or in pie charts.
